Anemoni and The Bad Waitress
Check out this MNStories video of Chuck and Lori having breakfast at The Bad Waitress. I myself give the restaurant 3 out of 4 eyebrows. I went there for lunch with my cousin one day and had one of their grilled sandwiches with tomatoes, spinach and swiss cheese on pumpernickel, alongside a big bowl of spicy tomato soup. Both were very tasty. Not to mention a very good deal; I think my tab was under $10.00.
But if you listened to Chowhounds! last Saturday, you already heard me talking about my lunch at The Bad Waitress. What's that you're saying? You were busy doing something else on Christmas Eve? Shame, shame. Then you also missed my review of Anemoni. But I'll go over it again, just for you.
I don't have a whole lot to say about Anemoni, because it's a sushi bar. And I'm a vegetarian. All veggie sushi kinda tastes the same to me (and maybe regular sushi does, too, I don't know), and Anemoni was no exception. But here are some things I liked about it:
- The decor. It's brighter and more modern-looking than Azia. You actually do feel like you're in an entirely different restaurant, despite having walked through the Azia door and been seated by the Azia host.
- The availability of the full Azia bar, including Thom Pham's wonderful signature cocktails.
- The availability of Azia's marvelous miso soup! A smaller portion at a smaller price, but still the same pretty red broth, soft tofu chunks, strips of salty seaweed, and a sprinkle of onion.
- The oyster bar. Again, not something I partake in, but I think it's a great addition to the Minneapolis food scene. Anyone who's tried both Anemoni's and Stella's oyster bars should let me know how they compare to each other.
The only weird thing about Anemoni was the DJ booth. There's this elevated, crow's nest DJ booth up on the wall between the sushi bar and the oyster bar. It just seems a bit out of place. If I wanted to listen to hip trance music, I'd head to the other end of the building and grab a cocktail alongside the beautiful people back in The Caterpillar Lounge. Oh well. At least the music in Anemoni is played at a comfortable, conversational level.
The last thing Andrew and I talked about on Chowhounds! was the menu over at Mayslack's getting a facelift. Check out this dive bar thread over on MNSpeak for the full scoop. (Yeah, I know. Lazy blogging. I can't help it, I'm all sluggish and fat from holiday binging.)
[Edit: Whoops! I forgot to mention the prices at Anemoni (the website doesn't list them). Told you I was feeling lazy. Luckily, I just happen to have a menu. Here you go.]
I loved that video review! That Lori has some genuine screen presence. Good editing, too.
