Buen Viaje

I have a bunch of stuff in my inbox that I wanted to get to this week and share on Girl Friday, but I was a little piled up with Vita.mn work. I'm leaving for Mexico on Sunday for 5 days, so I had to double up my weekly work load, not to mention start prepping for my next cover story coming out next month. Stay tuned for that; it should be a fun one.

So I'm outta here until next week. Please remember everything cool that happens while I'm gone and leave them in the comments, because there's no way in hell I'm going back through 5 days of tweets. Also, I'm going to try to clear all the spam comments from Girl Friday before I go. They're cluttering everything up and it's driving me crazy. Hey TypePad, if you're listening: WTF? I can hardly keep up anymore.

I'm finally cashing in the free trip I won on Twitter last year from Karisma Hotels. Cross your fingers for better weather; it's been a little on the rainy side the last 2 weeks. Though if I remember anything about rain in that area (I haven't been to Cancun in a few years) it usually passes quickly.

¡Paz y amor!

Congrats to Andrew Zimmern!

A big hug and congratulations to Andrew Zimmern for winning the James Beard Foundation Media Award for top TV Food Personality. Andrew's show, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, is in its 5th season on The Travel Channel.

I was chatting on the phone with Chandrew the week before the Media Awards weekend and there was no doubt in his mind that Alton Brown or Rick Bayless (both also super dudes with super shows) would win in his category. He didn't think he had a chance.

Goes to show what you know, Lil' A. Congratulations!

This My 'Hood

New York Times Travel: 13th Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis, Revived

The May opening of Northeast Social (No. 359; 612-877-8111; northeastsocial.com) marked the neighborhood’s move upmarket. The chef-owned bistro specializes in farm-fresh comfort food, like potato gnocchi stroganoff ($15). Here, too, neighborhood artists get their due: The row of lurid, long-necked portraits — think goth Modiglianis — comes from the painter Nicholas Harper, who runs the Rogue Buddha Gallery next door (No. 357; 612-331-3889; roguebuddha.com).

Indeed, neighborly collaboration seems to be the rule. When the writer and performer Stephanie Wilbur Ash stages her radio variety show, “PowderKeg Live!” at the Ritz Theater (No. 345; 612-623-7660; ritzdolls.com), “the restaurant next door will put out free brats before the show,” she said, referring to the Modern Café (No. 337; 612-378-9882; moderncafeminneapolis.com), the granddaddy of the street, where weekend brunch continues to be a local affair.

Restaurant Week in D.C.

Sadly, I did not see any national monuments or museums while I was in D.C. last week. In my defense it was really cold! Unseasonably so. Too chilly to be wandering around without layers, and I'm a carry-on-only kind of traveler. I'll save the sightseeing for next time, once I assemble a new list of restaurants to try out there.

I did check out three places during Restaurant Week last week:

Rasika - The tawa baingan haunts me. Slices of tender eggplant layered with fluffy spiced potato, served over a tangy and fragrant peanut sauce with a touch of tamarind. It's only January and I'm saying this could go down as my favorite entree of 2010. The palak chaat is a pile of crispy, flash-fried spinach drizzled with savory-sweet sauces. Each bite just melts in your mouth. The dal makhani was hands-down the best I've ever had, a perfect balance of buttery and spicy. It was made even better with a side of fresh, hot naan drizzled with truffle oil. The nutty fig kulfi failed to bowl me over -- I like my Indian desserts a little creamier and fruitier -- but my bartender Brad gets serious snaps for his mango cosmopolitans. Wow. I need to teach that recipe to a few of my barkeeps here. Rasika is sexy but cozy, with an inventive, contemporary Indian menu.

Co Co. Sala - They were only serving the Restaurant Week menu, which was fine because they were considerate with the vegetarian options. For some reason, I don't remember the tomato croustade amuse bouche. I mean, I remember that I ate it but I don't remember if I liked it or not. I'm sure it was great and I was just too distracted by my Co Co Jito to pay attention. The cocktail is made with chocolate-infused vodka instead of rum, then blended with the requisite muddled lime, mint, sugar and splash of soda. Some dark chocolate curls are dropped on top -- Co Co. Sala is a chocolate-inspired restaurant, right down to the decor -- and there it is: the Co Co Jito. I was apprehensive at first, but after the first sip it was clear they know what they're doing over there. My dinner's highlight was actually the salad; peppery arugula tossed with fresh orange, chewy dates, thin slices of apple and shaved manchego cheese. The thick coffee vinaigrette was an unexpected replacement for a standard balsamic reduction, but totally brought it all together. No surprise that the desserts were to die for: a platter of caramel-centric treats included an almond-apple tart, caramel corn gelato, toffee praline and a caramel-cinnamon "shooter." The chocolate version had a malted milk "shooter," bananas foster, a fudgy mini cupcake and chocolate-peanut butter ice cream. Incredible.

Asia Nine - I'm gonna go ahead and obey Thumper's Rule here and not say too much about Asia Nine. The vegetarian menu options are actually vegetarian and not sketchy, fish-saucy vegetarian, so that was a plus. But the green curry could've used a lot more flavor (not to mention heat, since it was marked with 2-stars) and the spring rolls were as ho-hum as anything store-bought.* The sake selection was decent and the dining room and raised sushi bar were beautifully decorated. Except for the fake plastic tea lights. I really hate those things. Our server either curled up in the kitchen and died or just forgot about us after the entrees were delivered. Asia Nine's only redemption of the evening was another server who stopped by the table to tell me how pretty I was. What can I say, it's that easy.

*With the exception, of course, of Lotus egg rolls, which are perfectly delicious.

I'm Back

Bet you didn't even know I left.

Weekend blog post coming up soon; I skipped town for a few days (like four) and had some great food while I was gone. In fact, I can still taste the tawa baigan I ate at Rasika. I'll tell you all about it soon, but right now I have to go get my hurr did.

Still Alive

Wow, I haven't updated this blog since last week? For shame, Alexis. For shame.

I haven't died or anything. Rather the opposite, as this week I've been busy obsessing over obese flight attendants on vita.mn and Chris Shaffer on Twitter. He has amazing hair.

I want to give a belated shout out to Nintendo for throwing a party for my friends and me a few Sundays ago, and especially for giving everyone a free DSi. And for catering it with awesome food and for being cool with the fact that we drank every last drop of booze in under three hours.

Also, big ups to Cirque du Soleil for the gratis tickets to Kooza last week. I'd never seen a CDS show before and I was totally blown away. Highly recommended, for all ages.

Alright, my inbox is full of great stuff, so here we go:

- The Uptown Market will hold its second event this Sunday. Check out wares from local artists, crafters, farmers and food vendors from 11:00am-5:00pm. They're on 29th Street between Lyndale and Dupont.

- If you loved the antics of my fellow 10 Second Film Festival judge, the misguided philanthropist Mrs. Smith, head to Patrick's Cabaret this Friday and Saturday night. Local actor and musician David Hanbury will be performing as Mrs. Smith for "Queer Boyz Nite," starting at 8:00pm both nights.

- Minneapolis Picks has launched Minneapolis Picks Perks. Take advantage of great monthly specials at all the best local shops and boutiques in the metro area.

- Arc's Value Village is having a storewide summer clearance sale next Saturday and Sunday, July 25th and 26th. All merchandise (except white-tagged items) will be 50% off.

-The Living Room at the W Hotel is now hosting Martini & Mani Mondays. Every Monday from 5:30-8:00pm, just $17 will get you a martini and a manicure (courtesy of Denny Kemp Salon) or a martini and a massage. That, as you know, is a great deal.

- No more confusion, it's definitely this Saturday, July 25th: Blacklist Vintage is having a Digger's Sale from 11:00am-7:00pm. Owner Vanessa Messersmith says she's lining the sidewalk with $1-5 bins full of vintage textiles, clothing and housewares, and the shop's entire inventory will be 10% off. There will also be free cupcakes and drinks, $1 regular and veggie hot dogs and Transmission DJ Jake Rudh spinning from 12:00-4:00pm. Sounds like a party!

[Or is it August 22? Or 29? Or, and this is most likely, is it really this Saturday, July 25th? Stay tuned for a correction. The email I got last week definitely says "Saturday, August 25."]

I won a what?!

I was feeling a little sloth-y today, not having gotten dressed until 3:00pm and still in need of a shower after spending the previous afternoon gardening at my parents' house. Turns out, whiling away much of your day on the internet can really pay off. I entered a contest via Twitter for a 5-night Mayan Riviera getaway from Karisma Hotels & Resorts and, by the time I finished showering and touching up my roots (a task I will never attempt again), Karisma had announced that I was the winner!

Yucatan, baby, here I come!

I'm still waiting for an email with the full details of the package, but I'm crossing my fingers that the blackout dates aren't too strict. The Mexican won't be able to accompany me if I have to go soon and, if that's the case, he's making me bring my mom.

Oops

Apparently, the episode of HGTV's Decorating Cents I was on just aired and ended 8 minutes ago.

I can only imagine it'll be rerun several dozen times over the next year.

But oh, you can catch me on February 10th on the Travel Channel with Lil' A.  It looks like the "Sexy Food" special we shot at Hell's Kitchen will be airing at 9:00pm and 10:00pm?  Someone may want to confirm that.

Vegas Recap

I'm bitter about being back in the cold so, if you encounter me in the next few days, just try not to comment on the weather.  I was able to soak up plenty of sun while in Vegas, so hopefully my body is busy photosynthesizing enough vitamin D to get me through the rest of the season without getting violent.  Has Seasonal Affected Disorder been successfully used as a criminal defense for murder yet?  I may need one of those S.A.D. lights.

Anyway, Vegas was good to me, as always.  That's not to say I did very well on the casino floor, as I think I came out $6.00 down, but I very much enjoyed the tee shirt weather, comfortable amenities of Bally's Hotel, and the great dining options of Las Vegas.  But wait, didn't I say I was staying Downtown?  Yes, but that was before I spent one night in my room at the Four Queens.  Never having stayed Downtown before, I had no idea the music on Fremont Street blares 24 hours a day, and the sound and light show goes on until midnight- no bueno for a girl on Central Standard Time who happens to really cherish her sleep, even in Sin City.  Also, there's no security to be found near the elevators to the rooms, which is far from comforting when you're a female rolling solo in Drunkypants Douchebag Land.  And call me naïve, but I had no idea there's literally nothing to do Downtown.  I now realize that the only reason the locals party there is because you can get a shot of Jose Cuervo and a can of Tecate for $1.00, any hour of the day.

I did have a great pizza and microbrew root beer in the Four Queens, though.  Chicago Brewing Company has a little outpost in the casino and they serve up a delicious, perfectly Midwestern-style pizza; flat and cut into squares with too much cheese.  They also brew their own beer, but I had just gotten off a plane and opted for the root beer instead, which was creamy and minty and perfectly effervescent.

Other culinary highlights from my trip include:

La Salsa Cantina: A respectable Tex-Mex franchise chain.  Go here when you want out of the casinos and are in need of fresh air.  The food is decent enough that it won't kill you, but the bottles of Modelo Especial are only $2.00.  I encountered three La Salsa Cantinas within as many blocks of Bally's, and there were people handing out 2-4-1 beer coupons in front of all of them.  The one at Caesar's Palace has a great patio with a view.

Yolos at Planet Hollywood: Standard upscale casino dining, but the most authentic Mexican menu I saw while in Las Vegas.  I had a delicious plate of bursting vegetarian enchiladas in adobo-flavored sauce, with black beans and Spanish-style rice.  Perfectly reminiscent of a weekday meal at home.  Not much for in-house ambiance, but the bar juts out onto the casino floor, so the people-watching from there is great.

Earl of Sandwich in the Miracle Mile Shops: A national hot sandwiches, wraps and salads chain that saved my ass from spending too much money on midday meals.  There are no Earl of Sandwiches here, but there should be.  The ciabatta-like bread is soft and flavorful, and the menu boasts four vegetarian sandwich options (which is three more than Potbelly), plus meat-free potato and pasta salads.  Understand that I would've loved to get my cheap lunches someplace small and locally-owned, but that's just not possible on The Strip.  Besides, "cheap" doesn't apply to food prices on The Strip, only alcohol.

Sully's Bar in Bally's Hotel: My preferred watering hole.  I met a lot of really nice people (hi Linda!) and, of course, as long as you're playing an embedded video poker machine, the Coronas come free of charge.

I should also note that a new law has been put in place since the last time I visited Las Vegas.  As of early 2007, an establishment must have more than 15 gaming machines to allow smoking.  Ergo, smoking is now prohibited in almost every restaurant.  Here's an article from June 2008 about how the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act is still being largely ignored.

Bartolotta: Of course.  Where can a girl drop a Benjamin on herself for dinner and not feel the least bit guilty about it?  Bartolotta at the Wynn, a fantastic Italian ristorante where the fish, cheese and produce get flown in daily from the motherland.  I had the pleasure of sitting a couple bar stools down from Chef Paul Bartolotta, who was vividly engaged in a business conversation with two well-heeled men about 5 years younger than me.  As Chefs tend to do, Paul was dropping a lot of F-bombs and bitching loudly about his employer; apparently you can do that when the restaurant bears your name, even if it's in the dining room in front of customers during dinner service, in an establishment where proper attire is strongly suggested.

In the hour that Paul was sitting gabbing at the bar, I got the distinct impression that the staff doesn't much care for him.  There was a lot of eye-rolling and whispering, even from the all-male server fleet, who are also imported from Italy (save one guy from Mexico).  I really wanted to talk to Paul about some business of my own, but neither I nor my bartender were able to grab his attention before he shot back to the kitchen posthaste, presumably after realizing how long he'd been sitting at the bar.

Don't get me wrong, I totally respect the man; he's a rockstar in the way that Chefs are rockstars these days.  And I had a wonderful time at Bartolotta because the food is amazing and my bartenders were top notch; knowledgable, attentive, and excellent at making a solo diner feel as if she's not dining solo.  In fact, from now on I think I will exclusively dine at the bar at Bartolotta, regardless of if I'm alone or not.  It's where I usually eat when I'm out and about in Minneapolis, anyway.

The Wells Fargo ATM: In the Harrah's court, just beyond the side door, saving you $6.00 in ATM fees if you happen to bank at WF or Wachovia.  It's an unmarked outdoor machine set into a wall that you don't notice is a WF machine until you step up to the screen.  Slightly bummed that I didn't think to look up ATM locations on the WF website until the last day I was there, but at least I saved a little money.

See Ya

I booked a solo trip to Vegas for later this week.  I'm leaving Wednesday and am super excited for some much-needed Lexi Time (no masturbation jokes, please).

Between 2001 and 2005 I went to Vegas more times than I can count -- my BFF used to live there and it's the cheapest possible vacay -- but this will actually be my first time staying in a Downtown hotel versus a Strip hotel or someone's condo.

I'm pretty well over the Strip, though.  Musical fountains, blah, blah blah.  The initial wow feeling of walking through those giant casino hotels doesn't last long and the clubs are somewhat boring to this aging gal.  I'll still go to The Wynn for one night, though, if just to have dinner at Bartolotta.

Yum, I'm totally salivating already.
