The Pioneer Press hit the nail on the head today, saying that the treats at Cupcake "were better in the beginning. Now, they taste like they are made from a commercial mix. At $2.95 each, they should taste beyond wonderful." I was so excited the first time I went to Cupcake that I tore into the half-dozen assortment on the car ride home. Gourmet cupcakes? Are you kidding me? Yum. Except they just weren't that good. My cupcakes tasted like they'd been in the refrigerated case for two days, absorbing the flavors of various other foods. They were also very dry and spongy. Cupcakes should be moist and velvety. I've vowed to go back and give them one more try, though. I can't give up just yet.
More tips on local treats can be found in the current "Feminist Finds" issue of the Minnesota Women's Press. Hint: go with what you know. Wuollet still has the best cakes in town. Best cakes in five towns, actually (Edina, Uptown Minneapolis, St. Paul, Wayzata, White Bear Lake).
Wuollet's makes my favorite cake of all time. It's a chocolate cake that is layered with thick bands of hand whipped cream. The cream tastes exactly as it should, not Reddi-Whip-sweet or Cool-Whip-greasy. The cake feels full of pudding and melts in your mouth with the cream. Infuckingcredible and it's the only birthday cake I ever have. I'd rather not eat birthday cake if I can't have this.
