Whatever happened to Northeast Beat? It was doing so well and then, ka-put. Now I feel like it's my duty to give the first reminder about things like Art-a-Whirl which, as always, is going down the third weekend of May (Friday the 16th-Sunday the 18th). Much more information on this in the coming weeks.
Earth Day is also coming up (April 22nd) and the stylish residents of Northeast are celebrating with a fashion show. The Green Gala is "an evening of recycled, reused and socially responsible fashion" that will take place Saturday April 19th from 7:00-10:00pm at the Northrup King Building. The event will feature textile art and clothing from Rewind, Lula, Silver Angel, Melrose Antiques and a handful of other retailers and local designers.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $30 at the door, and include hors d'oeuvres and drinks for the family. Children 12 and under are admitted for free.
Nicholas Harper is out of hibernation and his Rogue Buddha Gallery is open once again. He's hosting the Scion Installation Art Tour tonight. From Gregory Scott's vita.mn piece: "The nine-city traveling exhibition largely features artists championed in Juxtapoz magazine -- such giants of lowbrow illustration as Ron English, Blek LeRat and Jeff Soto. DJs Kool Akiem and Jonathan Ackerman will spin."
That's tonight from 7:00-11:00pm and, of course, it's free.
Haugen got recruited to set up a NE community page on the TC Daily Planet. TCDP is essentially just an aggregator of community newspaper stories. Haugen doesn't appear to contribute much anymore, nor do his contributors to NE Beat.
As far as I can find, you're now the leading reporter on Eastside eats and arts.

Who the heck reads TC Daily Planet, anyway? Bring back Haugen.

Hi Alexis -- Just came across this ping from way back. Blogger burnout had a lot to do with it, I guess. I was struggling to keep up the site and hustle enough paid writing to get by. I took a part-time contract job with the Daily Planet, where I tried (and mostly failed) to create a similar neighborhood hub there. And now I'm freelance writing, mostly covering business but trying to slip in a Northeaster story here and there when I can. I did set up a Northeast social network on Ning (http://northeastbeat.ning.com). I'm also tagging tweets #nempls. I just renewed the northeastbeat domain, so who knows what happens in the future...
